OUR LOSS STORIES
Jessica Toby
Broker/Officer, REALTOR®
California Association of REALTORS® Probate and Trust Specialist
Jessica lost her 34-year-old fiancé after 14 years together when she too was only 34. The pair owned property and operated multiple businesses together, including Graff Realty. Her fiancé died on June 30, 2021, and without instruction, Jessica was left with handfuls of mortgage payments to be paid and rent payments to be collected from tenants the next day.
She remembers the panic she felt the day after his death and asking a family member if he thought she was going to have to sell the primary residence that she shared with her fiancé.
She remembers meeting with a salesperson at a mortuary a few days after his death, and the salesperson attempting to sell her thank you cards for her to distribute to funeral guests. She felt like no one understood her unless they experienced the loss of their significant other in the same sudden, traumatic way.
Jessica retained three law firms in three states to address the legal issues surrounding her fiancé’s rental property portfolio. Thanks to her real estate experience, she challenged one of the firms and only 19% of the portfolio went to probate when she was initially told 100% would have to be probated.
Now, she’s passionate about blurring the lines between her real estate career and personal life by providing competent real estate services to those who are living through the post-death experience. She has a wealth of real estate knowledge and understands that selling property after a significant other’s death is delicate and complicated in its unique way.
Bianca Reber
REALTOR®
California Association of REALTORS® Probate and Trust Specialist
Bianca’s 47-year-old father passed away suddenly when she was only 7 years old. She remembers writing him a get well card the day he was taken by ambulance, unaware that he would not be returning home.
Bianca’s mom stayed at home raising Bianca and her sister until then, and 7-year-old Bianca remembers worrying about the possibility of having to move out of her house, and the mortality of her mother, which would have left her and her sister orphaned.
The daughter of a now single mother, Bianca remembers going to the grocery store alone at the age of 12 to purchase ingredients to make herself dinner.
As an adult, Bianca has difficulty relating to the struggles of her peers, as she experienced such a significant loss at such a young age. She still thinks about how different her life would be today if her dad was alive.
Bianca has understood what it’s like to lose a loved one most of her life and utilizes that understanding in her work when orchestrating the sale of properties for those who are experiencing loss.
